The aim of this course is to support maths teachers to embed inclusive, language-aware pedagogy into everyday maths teaching.

Programme aim

This interactive two-part course is designed for post-16 maths specialists who teach ESOL learners on Functional Skills or GCSE maths programmes. You will explore practical strategies to support ESOL learners navigating maths alongside language challenges and diverse educational backgrounds.

Who is this for?

This course is for post-16 maths teachers / subject specialists teaching ESOL learners in Functional Skills or GCSE maths programmes who want to reduce language-related barriers and develop inclusive classroom practices that improve access, participation, and attainment for all learners.

Programme structure

Open format: 2 x 2 hour sessions
In-house format: 2 x 2.5 hour sessions

What will you gain?

Consider the diverse profiles of ESOL learners in post-16 maths classrooms.

Recognise and analyse the language demands of maths.

Apply a range of instructional strategies to support ESOL learners in developing mathematical language.

Explore the CPA (Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract) model as a tool to support ESOL learners in developing secure mathematical understanding with reduced language load.

Explore strategies for building learner confidence with “wordy” problem-solving questions.

Consider the design of inclusive activities that support access without lowering challenge.

Consider effective assessment for learning strategies to assess ESOL maths learners accurately and distinguish between language and mathematical barriers.
