  • 6 October 2026 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
  • SEND 26/27
  • 8247b927-113b-475c-a3d4-c3c2aca1d8ae

This session focuses on equipping college staff with the skills and models needed to deliver effective, one-to-one career information and guidance (CIAG) conversations with students. Drawing on practical approaches, it explores how staff can engage students meaningfully and support their career development, while also highlighting the role of qualified Career Advisers in enhancing guidance provision. Participants will examine strategies for maximising the impact of CIAG within limited resources, including the use of campus-based meetings and online platforms. The session provides actionable insights and tools to ensure that all students receive personalised, high-quality support that informs their progression and career decision-making.

Programme aim

In this Luminate led session, participants will explore effective approaches to careers information, advice and guidance (CIAG) conversations with SEND and high needs learners.

The session will introduce the principles of Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG), the importance of the Gatsby Benchmarks, and practical communication techniques including active listening and paraphrasing. Participants will review a structured three-stage IAG interview model and consider how meaningful one-to-one conversations can support learners in exploring their future pathways.

The session will also examine approaches for engaging students with qualified Careers Advisers and making effective use of available resources. Through discussion and practical examples, participants will consider how FE provisions can strengthen CIAG support and create opportunities for learners to access personalised careers guidance.
