Helping Functional Skills English Learners with the Non-Fiction Writing Process - September 2026

This two-part course is designed for English teachers working with Functional Skills learners. It offers practical guidance on supporting students through the entire non-fiction writing process—from planning and structuring writing for specific audiences and purposes , to using teacher modelling and collaborative techniques to build writing confidence.

Programme aim

To develop practitioners’ knowledge and confidence in supporting learners through the full non-fiction writing process for Functional Skills English—starting with planning and structuring writing, and progressing to using modelling and collaboration techniques to improve writing outcomes.

Who is this for?

Any English teachers who want to focus on improving the the non-fiction writing process.

Programme structure

2 x 2.5 hour sessions

What will you gain?

Identify key challenges learners face with non-fiction writing and apply practical strategies to develop planning, structure, and coherence in their written work.
Design and deliver purposeful activities that develop learners’ ability to plan, organise, and write clearly for a range of non-fiction purposes and audiences.
Apply teacher modelling techniques to demonstrate writing processes clearly and support learners’ writing development.

Explore collaborative writing strategies and interactive tools to increase learner engagement and improve writing outcomes in Functional Skills English.
