Ensure language is never a barrier to maths success. Explore practical strategies to support ESOL learners navigating maths alongside language challenges and diverse educational backgrounds.

Programme aim

The aim of this course is to support maths teachers to embed inclusive, language-aware pedagogy into everyday maths teaching. Participants will develop strategies to:
  • reduce language-related barriers for ESOL learners
  • support mathematical reasoning and discussion
  • design tasks that maintain high expectations while improving access for all learners
The course focuses on whole-class approaches that improve outcomes for ESOL learners while strengthening teaching and learning for the wider group.

Who is this for?

This course is for post-16 maths teachers/subject specialists teaching ESOL learners in Functional Skills or GCSE maths programmes who want to reduce language-related barriers and develop inclusive classroom practices that improve access, participation, and attainment for all learners.

Programme structure

2 x 2.5 hour sessions

Apply a range of instructional strategies to support ESOL learners in developing mathematical language.
Explore the CPA (Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract) model as a tool to support ESOL learners in developing secure mathematical understanding with reduced language load.
Explore strategies for building learner confidence with “wordy” problem-solving questions.
Consider the design of inclusive activities that support access without lowering challenge.

Consider effective assessment for learning strategies to assess ESOL maths learners accurately and distinguish between language and mathematical barriers.
