This interactive course offers an introduction to the key ideas and terminology of post-16 phonics. You will explore important guiding principles to apply to your practice to optimise the influence phonics can have on learners.

Programme aim

To provide participants with an introduction to the key ideas, terminology and guiding principles underpinning post-16 phonics approaches.

Who is this for?

This course is for teachers of Functional Skills and GCSE English in the post-16 sector or learning support assistants who support learners working towards these qualifications, as phonics approaches can be useful for many learners.

Programme structure

This course is 2 hours in length and can be delivered as a live online session or face-to-face delivery.

What will you gain?

Learn about the following key terms and concepts: phoneme, grapheme, grapheme-phoneme correspondence, syllable, basic code, basic code plus and one-to-many.
Explore some of the guiding principles of post-16 phonics.
Break words down into their component phonemes, graphemes and syllables and have an improved awareness of how phonics can be used to support a wide range of learner needs (including adaptations for qualification differences and different approaches for supporting reading and spelling).
