Programme aim

Enhance teachers’ own conceptual understanding of fractions, decimals, percentages, and place value so that they are able to better support learners.
Support teachers in creating a solid foundation for all learners in fractions, decimals, percentages and place value.

Who is this for?

This course is designed for new and experienced education practitioners involved in teaching Functional Skills Maths to post-16 learners who are looking to increase their own understanding in this area of maths as well as for way to support their learners' understanding.
This course is particularly suitable for:
  • Functional Skills Maths teachers
  • GCSE teachers teaching learners with a prior attainment of a grade 1 or 2 (or equivalent)
  • Maths teachers teaching non-regulated maths courses
  • Practitioners who support learners in maths classes or on a 1:1 basis

Programme structure

2 x 2.5 hour sessions

What will you gain?

Identify core knowledge, skills and understanding required to become proficient in   fractions, decimals and percentages (FDP).
Consider ways of delivering FDP in concrete ways to create meaning and confidence.
Explore bar modelling as a teaching technique for parts of whole numbers.
Identify misconceptions and learn how to use them as a teaching tool.
Reflect on how you might use these activities and approaches in your own teaching.
