Teaching ESOL: Developing Your Practice In House

Developed by the Education Training Foundation (ETF), this course supports understanding and responding to the language-learning needs, motivations, and barriers of different learner groups.

Programme aim

This course, designed to be the standard of a Level 5 qualification module, is designed to support participants to become more confident in analysing the English Language needs of their ESOL learners, planning teaching and learning activities to help learners develop their language awareness and the four English language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. 

Who is this for?

New and experienced teachers of ESOL within the post-16 sector, especially those who have had no previous Level 5 subject specialist training.  

Programme structure

What will you gain?

Explore approaches to understanding and responding to the language learning needs, motivations and barriers of different learner groups, e.g. refugees and asylum seekers

Explore approaches to teaching all four literacy skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing), grammar and vocabulary

Develop your linguistic knowledge (to support the analysis of learners’ English language skills) and awareness of different theories of language learning

explore approaches to teaching basic literacy and working with learners new to ESOL.

Consider how to integrate digital technology into ESOL classes
