This session will explore working with learners who choose to be non-verbal or find verbal communication extremely challenging in specific circumstances. Practitioners will consider effective strategies to support learners and ensure they have equal access to learning. This session is not focused on learners who are pre-verbal and at an early stage of cognitive development. The session is focused on learners who can use verbal communication but are either choosing not to or find they cannot in certain circumstances.
Programme aim
Explore working with learners who choose not to use verbal communication for a variety of reasons including social anxiety, mental health and sensory regulation. This can be called selective mutism.

Teachers, practitioners and learning support staff in the FE and Skills sector.
